Hesperra
A coastal land. The sun has hung frozen mid-sunset for 405 years. Lantern and night split the land in two.
the Held Dusk
- Geography
- A coastal plain west of the Arena. It has salt marshes and towns of white stone. Since 842 AS the sun has stood frozen on the western horizon. The western half is called the Light Side. It lives in an endless golden dusk. The eastern half is called the Night Side. It is cold, and its shadows are long. The border between the two halves is the Dusk Line. Those caught in the open in 842 still stand in the fields. They are called the Dusk Dead. Most of the Dusk Dead stand in the Long Field.
- Climate
- A cool climate that never changes. The west is mild and the east is cold. Crops grow thin. The fog never lifts.
- Culture
- A people split in two. The Lantern Order lights the roads with lanterns. The Order promises that Dawn will come one day. The Night Court wants the sun to set. The Court believes the Dusk Dead cannot rest until night comes. Both sides bury their dead facing the sun.
- Governance
- Priests, the Order, rule the west. Hidden noble families, the Court, rule the east. The peace between them rests on the Dusk Accord.
- Faith
- The Order believes in the Promise of Dawn. By this promise, the sun will rise one day. The Court believes in the Closing. By the Closing, the day must end first.
- Economy
- Salt, lantern oil and held-light glass. They make lantern oil from marsh eels. Held-light glass is a lens that holds frozen sunlight inside it. It glows turquoise. Hesperra is in debt to Tavellin.
