the Zahreth Spires
A cliff people. They see lightning as writing. They touch a storm only with permission.
the Ears of the Sky
- Geography
- East of the Arena stand needle-like limestone spires and giant sea cliffs. The Zahreth Arm is one of the six rivers born from the Arena. It plunges off the cliffs into the Sea of Clouds below. The people carve their homes into the cliffs. These homes are called eyries. Bridges of rope and bone link the eyries. Wind chimes and copper lightning rods are everywhere. The largest eyrie is Tel-Azra.
- Climate
- Windy and cold. Lightning season comes twice a year.
- Culture
- Wind Readers see lightning as writing in the sky, and they read it. Every child gets a bird name or a wind name. The Falconers are Devran's postal network. The letters they carry are sacred. No one reads them.
- Governance
- The Storm Council is made up of elder readers. Calling a storm requires a license. Whoever touches a storm without leave cuts off the sky mid-word. The punishment is exile.
- Faith
- Sky Script. Dem is time in solid form in Devran. The crackle of Dem in the air is a letter the Arena writes to the world. Any script erased before it is read is a loss.
- Economy
- Weather prophecy, falcon post and fulgurite. Fulgurite is Dem glass made by lightning.
